Bahiana launches scientific journal with an innovative focus on Neuroscience

Brain Imaging and Stimulation (BIS) is a new Brazilian journal focused on the areas of brain imaging and neuromodulation and is the third journal in the world on the latter topic

The Escola Bahiana de Medicina e Saúde Pública, together with Rede de Núcleos de Assistência e Pesquisa em Neuromodulação (Rede NAPeN), has just launched the scientific journal Brain Imaging and Stimulation (BIS), integrating the BAHIANA Journals portal, an innovative initiative in the Brazilian and global scientific scene. The journal is focused on specific studies on brain imaging and stimulation, including lots of methods for studying brain activity, such as structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging, near-infrared spectroscopy, positron emission tomography, electroencephalography, and many others, besides invasive and non-invasive neuromodulation. According to Dr. Kátia Nunes Sá, co-editor of the journal with Dr. Abrahão Fontes Baptista, "It is the third journal in the world in brain neuromodulation, along with Brain Stimulation and Neuromodulation: Technology at the Neural Interface, of the International Neuromodulation Society (INS). The publication will be entirely in English and is aimed at an audience interested in deeply understanding the human brain and ways to enhance it."

Along with scientific articles, the journal's other distinguishing feature will include publishing content in video and infographic formats. "Brain Imaging and Stimulation (BIS) applies to an interdisciplinary science by nature, which is neuroscience. Professionals in medicine, psychology, physiotherapy, speech therapy, physical education, dentistry, occupational therapy, biology, computer science, physics, mathematics, and other segments seeking to deepen their knowledge about the brain and the different ways to enhance its functions may be interested in BIS", says Dr. Kátia Nunes Sá.

The journal does not charge submission or access fees for its contents, as it is a Diamond Open Access journal, totally subsidized by Bahiana and not by authors via article processing fees. It also means that the publication does not have marketing conflicts of interest since it does not need to receive any sponsorship from the industry once a non-profit foundation maintains Bahiana.

According to the BIS editor, Dr. Abrahão Fontes Baptista, Bahiana is, once again, at the forefront when it comes to innovative ideas in health: "Bahiana has a line of research in Neuroscience in its Stricto Sensu Graduate Program and collaborates with other reference centers in neuroscience in Brazil. Researchers from these institutions realized the need for

journal that could contemplate the areas of neuroimaging and neuromodulation. Given the gap identified in the theme, the desire of the group of researchers from our MSc and Ph.D. program was conciliated with the Neurosciences center of Bahiana Saúde and the Rede NAPeN, which involves several Brazilian universities, such as the Universidade Federal do ABC (UFABC), the Universidade de São Paulo (USP), and the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (UFPE). The Editorial Board is composed of researchers with very relevant production in the field within Brazil and abroad".

Those interested in submitting content for review and possible publication in Brain Imaging and Stimulation (BIS) can submit their material via: https://www5.bahiana.edu.br/index.php/brain/about/submissions
