From language as spirit to dance as the liberation of the soul
Language—whether spoken, written, or heard—is a symbolic technology created by the human brain. It functions as a cultural spirit, a socially organized semantic memory inhabiting living brains. These spirits—made of words, doctrines, commands, and dogmas—impose interoceptive and proprioceptive tensions on the Territorial Body.
These tensions shape what we call Tensional Selves—momentary optimizations of bodily positioning that emerge in response to cultural or environmental demands. And often, our soul—defined here as a conscious image of the self intertwined with emotion and lived experience, or existential metabolism—is silenced, giving way to colonial spirits, the imposed ideas that tell us who to be.
Colonialism: Controlling Souls Through Spirits of Language
European colonialism was a spiritual project of control. Through language, law, religion, and economy, it restricted the body, stripped movement, ritual, ancestry, and most importantly, the right to fully feel and be.
It interrupted the formation of our original soul (Pei Utupe) and replaced it with reactive consciousness, captured by ideological spirits—today amplified through social media algorithms and behavioral control technologies.
Scientific Grounding: Soul is a Living Body in Significant Tension
From the perspective of Decolonial Neuroscience—embracing the Damasian Mind, Tripartite Monism, Fruição, Apus, and Human Quorum Sensing—we propose that the soul can only exist in a living body, actively engaged with the present.
There is no soul without body, and no true spirit that doesn’t call the body into a dance with reality.
Neuroscientific evidence shows:
Religious and ideological language activates interoceptive obedience circuits in the brain (LPP, N400, P600).
Collective dance and rituals activate parasympathetic pathways, promoting co-regulation, neural synchrony and emotional grounding (Khalsa et al., 2021; Konvalinka et al., 2014).
The so-called Zone 2—a metabolic-emotional state where mTOR deactivates and the body shifts into repair and creativity—is facilitated through rhythmic movement, music, and group presence.

The Joinville Dance Festival—the world’s largest dance festival in number of participants—is not just art. It is neurocultural resistance.
There, bodies reclaim their right to move without colonizing spirits. Each movement becomes a gesture of soul recovery, of re-belonging to one’s own body, of fruition without guilt, fear, or imposed desires.
Thus we affirm:
Dancing is how we restore our liberated selves.
Now is the time for Decolonial Neuroscience.
Words are spirits, but bodies dance with soul.
The Global South no longer wants to obey—
It wants to live.
