Emotions, choices, and a brain under construction
Have you ever heard the phrase: “Teenagers are all impulsive”?
Well… what if impulsivity isn’t a flaw, but a natural process of a brain trying to reorganize itself?
Adolescence is one of the most intense periods of human life. It’s when the brain goes through a major structural, emotional, and social renovation. It’s not drama — it’s neuroscience.
Remodeling the Brain from Within
From around age 12 to the mid-20s, the brain undergoes a process called synaptic pruning. In this process, connections that are not frequently used are eliminated, while those that are more frequently activated become stronger. It’s like cleaning up neural networks, keeping only what really matters — or what is most repeated in daily life.
That’s why habits, strong emotions, and striking experiences during this phase have such a powerful impact. They define what the brain will retain as the foundation for adult life.
High-Voltage Emotions
At this stage, brain regions related to emotion (such as the amygdala) develop faster than those related to control (such as the prefrontal cortex). The result? Intense emotions, impulsiveness, bursts of laughter, crying fits — all at maximum volume.
This is where the Tensional Selves come into play: bodily and mental patterns that teenagers develop to deal with tensions. Each Tensional Self is like a way of being and acting that arises in response to the environment — and can be reorganized with support, listening, and time.
The Role of Avatars in Adolescence
During this period, our Neuroscientific Perception Avatars become more visible — and more vulnerable to ideological and emotional distortions. Here's how each one acts during adolescence:
Brainlly records everything intensely: images, music, faces, smells.
Iam organizes chaotic emotions into an emotional identity.
Olmeca absorbs cultural, aesthetic, and social patterns — and suffers under labels.
Yagé seeks freedom, experimentation, and meaning — but may fall into excess.
Math Heb detects all internal and external tensions, trying to build a stable Self.
DANA feels the call for a higher purpose — spiritual, social, or existential.
If one of these avatars is silenced (by fear, bullying, repression, or lack of listening), the adolescent shifts into Zone 3: over-activated consciousness, blocked creativity, and critical thinking limited by external ideologies. They stop being the author of themselves.
What Does Neuroscience Propose?
Adolescence is the ideal time to open space for metacognition — not to force it.
Top-down brain development, especially in the prefrontal cortex, only becomes fully consolidated between the ages of 25 and 30. This system is responsible for planning, emotional regulation, and deep reflection.
Trying to rigidly enforce metacognition too early can push teenagers into Zone 3, where they only simulate understanding, mimic ideological models, or adopt group beliefs to feel a sense of belonging. Fruição (flowful enjoyment) disappears, and learning becomes defensive.
That’s why neuroscience suggests:
Create environments that spark reflective curiosity without pressure.
Promote fruição: let the pleasure of exploration happen in the body’s own time.
Listen to the adolescent's Tensional Selves with empathy and patience.
Offer freedom with responsibility — not control through fear.
By doing this, we help the young person build, with time and consistency, a critical, sensitive, and original mind — without damaging their inner safety.
Question for you to reflect on:
If your brain is under construction...
Who is choosing the bricks? You, your group, or the algorithm?
